You may not be using your pool in winter but taking a little effort to maintain it can keep your pool clean and help you extend the swimming season.
TIPS TO MAINTAIN YOUR POOL IN WINTER
1. INSTALL A POOL HEATER
Winters needn’t play spoilsport for swimming enthusiasts anymore. The latest technology in pool heating systems now ensures that you can enjoy a swim in your warm pool even during winter.
- Available in three broad variations of solar heating, heat pumps, and gas heaters, pool heaters help extend the swimming season without breaking the bank or high energy bills.
- Thermo Pools supplies high-quality Thermo tube solar pool heating, gas heaters, and Astral heat pumps to help you get the most out of your swimming pool, even in winter.
2. CLEAN YOUR POOL AND USE A POOL COVER
You must regularly clean your pool in winter and use a pool cover to prevent debris from entering the pool.
- Pool cleaning need not be a tedious chore as you can use robotic pool cleaners to quickly and efficiently clean your pool.
- If your pool remains open during winter, you should ideally clean it once every week.
- Get all the debris and leaves out of the pool and use a pool cover to prevent it from collecting debris.
- Do not cover your pool all through the winter and air it at least once a week.
- Do remember to use a snow rake to pull the snow off the covers while the snow is fresh else it can weigh down the cover
3. BALANCE THE POOL WATER’S CHEMISTRY TO PREVENT ALGAE GROWTH
It is important to balance the chemical levels in the water to prevent bacteria and algae growth, contamination, and water lining and avoid a green pool.
- Check the chlorine, pH and Total Alkalinity levels once every fortnight to keep the water clean.
- The chlorine level should be between 1-2 ppm (parts per million) at all times during winter. Similarly, the pool’s pH balance should be maintained between 7.2 – 7.8, and the total Alkalinity levels must be between 80 to 120 million parts per million.
- Ensure that you use fresh chemicals each year for the best results since they are likely to lose their potency over time. Use a long-life algaecide that is specifically designed for winter and appropriate for your pool. Mix all the chemicals in a bucket of water and then add to the pool.
- The majority of pool owners these days are not comfortable dumping chemicals into their pools. Therefore to keep your pool, algae and bacteria-free, they use an automatic Chlorine doser like Rolachem RC9 Automatic Acid and Chlorine Doser and use a salt water chlorinator for an easier and better way to clean their pool. Thermo Pools supplies an extensive range of high-quality automatic pH controllers and Astral Pool’s salt chlorinators for ideal water quality.
If you are in doubt you can contact your local pool professional or take samples of your pool water and test using DIY test kits available over the counter.
4. MONITOR POOL EQUIPMENT AND REMOVE WATER FROM THE POOL PUMP AND FILTER
- Drain and blow out the pump and pool filter equipment to ensure that all excess water is removed.
- Water can freeze, expand or crack a pipe in your pool filter, thus causing damage to pool pump or filter.
- It is also advisable to clean the pool’s filter of any grease or oil dirt as these can harden and eventually reduce the filter’s efficiency.
